Tykes Young Carers was established in 1999 as a result of research, which showed that 4% of school pupils were caring for a member of their family, this equated to 74 young carers from 55 households, with the youngest at 5 years old and on average, the young carers had been caring for 4 years. Of these 74, 40 young people were caring for parents suffering from alcohol and substance misuse.
And of these 40, 39 of them were receiving no formal support.
Of the 74 young carers, 34 were caring for parents or siblings with a range of medical conditions.
The final report of the research concluded that young carers in Sutherland had few options and limited resources. The project was therefore established to provide information and support to children aged under 18 years of age who have a caring role within their family.
