Respite Activities

All TYKES' activities, trips and adventures are dependent on the generosity of our grant funders, donations and fundraising.

Respite Breaks

Longer, respite trips give our Young Carers a real break from their caring role for a while. These adventures include trips to:

  • Fairburn Activity Centre in Muir of Ord;

  • Hopscotch on the Ardnamurchan Penninsula;  and

  • Hebridean Pursuits, Glen Coe for a week of outdoor fun.

Summer Activities.

TYKES organises a programme of fun events throughout the Summer. These activities give a Young Carer time away from their caring role and allow Fieldworkers to maintain contact with our Young Carers and their families over the long, Summer holidays. Activities include: laser tag, swimming, picnics, day trips, berry picking, paddleboarding, beach days, hotel visits, and much, much more...

Projects.

Focused activities, held in TYKES' Centre, offer Young Carers time for fun and contemplation and a chance to learn new skills. Some examples include:

  • a two-day project in conjunction with Fresh Paint and Access All Arts;

  • an after-school sewing group run in partnership with Highland Community Waste Partnership and Lairg and District Learning Centre funded by SSE and many more planned...

Carers' Week.

Staff go on tour during Carers' Week visiting schools across Sutherland to:

  • Provide support for carers;

  • Run activities;

  • Highlight the vital role carers play in our communities and

  • Draw attention to just how important caring is.

Day Trips.

Short respite breaks include outings to Eden Court for the pantomime, Caithness Animal Farm Time to see some exotic creatures and Lochview Rural Training in Lairg to learn about crofting. One of our Young Carers took home an egg, incubated it and it hatched!
